Photon Shot Noise

چکیده
A recent theory is reviewed for the shot noise of coherent radiation propagating through a random medium. The Fano factor P/Ī (the ratio of the noise power and the mean transmitted current) is related to the scattering matrix of the medium. This is the optical analogue of Büttiker’s formula for electronic shot noise. Scattering by itself has no effect on the Fano factor, which remains equal to 1 (as for a Poisson process). Absorption and amplification both increase the Fano factor above the Poisson value. For strong absorption P/Ī has the universal limit 1 + 3 2 f , with f the Bose-Einstein function at the frequency of the incident radiation. This is the optical analogue of the one-third reduction factor of electronic shot noise in diffusive conductors. In the amplifying case the Fano factor diverges at the laser threshold, while the signal-to-noise ratio Ī/P reaches a finite, universal limit.

On the Use of Shot Noise for Photon Counting
Lieu et al. have recently claimed that it is possible to substantially improve the sensitivity of radio-astronomical observations. In essence, their proposal is to make use of the intensity of the photon shot noise as a measure of the photon arrival rate. Lieu et al. provide a detailed quantum-mechanical calculation of a proposed measurement scheme that uses two detectors and conclude that this...
متن کاملComputer-based photon-counting lock-in for phase detection at the shot-noise limit.
We implement a simple computer-based photon-counting lock-in that combines the signal-to-noise benefits of photon counting with lock-in detection. We experimentally specify the flatness and the noise characteristics of a flexible software implementation. The noise of amplitude and phase of the small signal is at the limit of photonic shot noise; from 1000 counted photons we reach an amplitude r...
متن کاملPhoton shot noise dephasing in the strong-dispersive limit of circuit QED
We study the photon shot noise dephasing of a superconducting transmon qubit in the strong-dispersive limit, due to the coupling of the qubit to its readout cavity. As each random arrival or departure of a photon is expected to completely dephase the qubit, we can control the rate at which the qubit experiences dephasing events by varying in situ the cavity mode population and decay rate. This ...

Shot noise: Fluctuations of the current flowing through a device that result from the discreteness of the charge carrier. Shot noise provides information on the charge carriers and the transport mechanism in the device. The shot noise measurements in semiconductor heterostructure devices shed light on how the devices operate, beyond information provided by the electrical conductance. The shot n...

We observe a novel signature of coherent transport in the nonequilibrium current fluctuations of a diffusive metallic conductor shorter than the electron phase-breaking length. Under illumination with monochromatic microwaves, the shot noise develops features at voltages corresponding to the photon energies, V nhnye, which are oscillatory functions of the microwave power, while the conductanc...
متن کاملScaling of the photon noise in semiconductor cascade lasers
Semiconductor cascade lasers have larger photon noise than conventional semiconductor lasers as a result of positive correlations in photon emission in different gain stages which are connected electrically in series. The photon noise of a cascade laser can be related to the photon noise of a single-stage laser with a scaled external circuit impedance. This scaling relation for the photon noise...
